Course Substitution Petition
Upper Division classes taken in the discipline of geography (taught by another Geography department) that transfer into UCLA may be applied to your major requirements through course substitute petition. Upper Division classes taken outside of the discipline require the same course substitute petition, but only 2 are allowed.
Review the guidelines in the header of the petition form carefully (see link below). In petitioning a substitute, you are asked to identify a specific UCLA Geography course comparable to the class you completed. For upper division GEOG course information and descriptions, please visit: https://registrar.ucla.edu/academics/course-descriptions?search=geog.
Course substitutions are approved by the Geography Undergraduate Faculty Committee to count toward the major/minor requirements if:
1) the course is letter-graded and the grade assigned is “B” or above, and;
2) explicitly demonstrate or engage geographical approaches, theories, and scholarship.
The department allows up to a maximum of two (2) upper division courses completed outside of the discipline of Geography to count towards a GEOG major/minor with the Undergraduate Faculty Committee’s approval. For Study Abroad courses taken in Geography departments and approved by UC Education Abroad (UCEAP), the number of upper division courses allowed is five (5) for majors and two (2) for minors. For Study Abroad courses from non-Geography departments and courses outside of the Department, there will be a maximum of two (2) upper division courses that can transfer to the majors and a maximum of one (1) upper division course that can transfer to the minor.
Substitutions for lower division GEOG courses are not permitted. Pre-approval of a course substitute is not provided.
Once the course you are proposing appears in your UCLA academic record or your degree audit, you may submit the petition with the supplemental documents requested to the department. Please follow the instructions in the header of the petition form and include the required supplemental documents for review. Petitions are reviewed in groups, two times per quarter, typically Weeks 5 and 9.
